Speech is a mirror of the soul:
as a man speaks, so is he.

Publilius Syrus ~100 BC.

(In 2012 we should say: ... as a woman speaks, so she is.)

A meeting

Toastmasters’ meetings thrive most when everyone participates. On a typical evening, the Toastmaster of the Evening acts as leader, a kind of emcee. He organizes the agenda and introduces speakers and in general assures a smooth time.

The foundation of the Toastmasters program is the Competent Communicator manual. In it there are projects that focus on various aspects and qualities at a speaker’s disposal: speech structure, body language, voice, persuasion, etc. Besides prepared speeches, there are opportunities for short impromptu speeches, and as important as the speeches themselves, evaluations.

In the impromptu, or Table Topics, speeches, it is your goal to react to any speaking situation with composure. In what may be equally as invaluable as giving prepared speeches, evaluations give the important guidance about what is good in their speeches, and what might be improved. The evaluator learns to be a partner of the speaker by providing praise where praise is deserved, and offering constructive criticism for those areas that could be better.

What makes Toastmasters so effective is that besides these roles, there are many other smaller ones that help make the evening operate smoothly and with a sense of purpose. It’s never too early to take on any role. “Learning by doing” is essentially the motto of Toastmasters.

We are listening.

We give them a round of applause.

We are evaluating the speech.
